Hundreds of people, including Cardinal Edward Egan, bid a sad farewell Tuesday in West Harrison to a well-known Catholic priest.
Mourners used songs and prayer to say goodbye to Monsignor Rudolph Eisler, 69, at St. Anthony of Padua Church. The Mount Vernon native died Friday of cancer.
Eisler, who became a priest in 1963, was remembered for his leadership at churches in Briarcliff, Congers, Pearl River, Spring Valley and West Harrison.
In a heartwarming service, Egan praised Eisler for his contributions to the community.
"He really taught us, I believe, the way we should leave this life on earth and enter a new life in heaven with great peace and prayer and surrounded by his loved ones," Egan said.
White Plains Mayor Joseph Delfino was also in attendance.
Eisler was laid to rest at Holy Mount Cemetery in Tuckahoe.
