Hundreds march in Yonkers for an end to violence
Hundreds marched through the streets of Yonkers Saturday to call for an end to violence they say is caused by drug dealing and gang violence.
The marchers were led by Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone and Jim Bostic, the executive director of the Nepperhan Community Center. They wanted to send a message that the mayhem and fear must be controlled with the cooperation of everyone in the community.
?Everyone must come together to fight the kind of violence that's happening in the downtown and in our neighborhoods,? Amicone said. Bostic said the solution lies in giving young people job apprenticeships, skills training programs and possibly more recreational centers.
The march ended up at Yonkers City Hall where there was a prayer for peace on the streets. Westchester District Attorney Janet DiFiore says her office will be behind the efforts to end violence.
