Hundreds came to pay their respects during the funeral for a former FDNY firefighter from Carmel who lost his battle to a Sept. 11-related illness.
Mourners lined the streets in front of St. James Church to honor Thomas Kelly, a 17-year veteran of the FDNY. He died Sunday from cancer at the age of 58.
Kelly was off-duty during the Sept. 11 attacks, but raced to the World Trade Center to help in the recovery effort.
His death comes just one month after Congress voted overwhelmingly to reauthorize the Zadora Act, which extends health care for sick first-responders through the year 2090.
