Hundreds of janitors took to the streets outside of the Westchester County government building Tuesday to demand better benefits.
The janitors, who work in buildings throughout the Hudson Valley, want a new contract that protects their benefits and includes raises.
Over 3,500 cleaners in the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County, Connecticut, are currently in negotiations. Their current contract expires at midnight on Dec. 31.
Despite a local unemployment rate of around 4 percent and billions in profits for local companies, union members say the contractors have not proposed a wage increase that would keep up with the rising cost of living.
