A new proposal would cover the cost of school breakfast and lunch for every student in New York state.
Gov. Kathy Hochul says it would expand eligibility for free meals to more than 300,000 students across the state. She also says it would save families an estimated $165 per child each month.
The governor's office says free meals support learning, boost test scores and improve behavior.
The proposal still needs to be approved in the 2025 budget before taking effect.
