Rockland County is mourning a firefighter who died trying to save senior citizens from a raging fire in Spring Valley on Tuesday.
County Executive Ed Day gave the heartbreaking news.
“Jared Lloyd gave his life in service to others. He searched as the building burned, determined to rescue anyone who had been trapped. His loss is devastating. There is no other way to put it. But I will tell you this, his loss and heroism will never be forgotten."

He was also an employee of Altice, News 12's parent company.
Altice released a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of our colleague Jared Lloyd. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as well as all those who have been impacted by this tragic event. Jared’s heroic actions and bravery as a volunteer firefighter will never be forgotten."
Evergreen Court Home for Adults has also released a statement saying, "We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Jared Lloyd, the brave firefighter who tragically lost his life Tuesday morning. Words cannot express the pain they must feel at this time. We hope they take comfort in knowing their son is a true hero whose bravery and courage saved countless lives."
Lloyd was also a dad of two children. All the officials at today's press conference were visibly upset and said they can't even remember the last time a firefighter died in the line of duty in this manner.
All 112 seniors living at the facility are accounted for. One male resident later died at the hospital.
Fire officials say numerous lives were saved Tuesday thanks to the heroic efforts of all the first responders.
There are multiple state and county agencies working together on the investigation into what caused the fire.
Lloyd's Optimum family did a drive-by past his firehouse to show support on Wednesday. They are planning another for Thursday and are hoping to part of his funeral procession as well.
