Fierce winds are wreaking havoc across the Hudson Valley, causing power outages and dangerously low temperatures.
New 12 Meteorologist Brysen Van Eck says the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for most of the Hudson Valley until this afternoon. Van Eck says that wind gusts of 20-30 mph will be common today and might possibly hit 50 mph.
Van Eck says that with a high temperature of 28 degrees today, the wind will make it feel like it is in the teens or single digits.
The wind is also being blamed for knocking out power to thousands of homes overnight.
In Yonkers, a utility pole and transformer came crashing down on Pine Street around 11 p.m. Tuesday. Luckily, the transformer did not start a fire, but oil did leak out and firefighters were on the scene to pour sand over the leakage. Power was knocked out to more than 800 customers in nearby apartment buildings and homes.
Con Edison crews were able to get the power back in a few hours for most customers, but a 40-unit apartment remains without power. It was expected to be back on Wednesday afternoon.
In New Rochelle, a transformer blew and knocked out power to more than 400 homes in the area of Echo Avenue and Soundview Street. Con Edison officials say the windy conditions caused a wire on a pole to loosen up, causing a breaker to shut down.
