“I am declaring a State of Emergency given flash flooding and high levels of rainfall in parts of the state,” the governor wrote in a post on X. “Please stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Stay safe, New Jersey.”
Heavy rain caused flooding, damage and road closures around the state – particularly in central New Jersey.

NJDOT is reporting downed trees, street flooding and road closures.
The storm brought several inches of rain per hour to areas of New Jersey. The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings throughout the state.

Newark Liberty International Airport issued a ground stop overnight due to the storm.
New Jersey Transit said that train and light rail service could be impacted by the weather. The agency also said that several bus routes are subject to detours due to flooding.
“NJ TRANSIT bus and private carrier bus services are accepting rail tickets and passes systemwide,” the company wrote on X.
STORM WATCH: Flash flooding prompts rescues along Route 22 in Watchung
First responders were forced to rescue some drivers who became stuck in flash flooding on Route 22 near New Providence Road in Watchung.
