Here are some stories making headlines across the Hudson Valley.
An off-duty New York City corrections captain has been charged with an attempted assault on a woman. An off-duty Yonkers police officer and an off-duty Westchester County police officer witnessed the man striking the woman with a gun in White Plains’ Waller parking lot on Sunday night. The two officers intervened, successfully disarming the suspect, identified as Tony Montague. Montague now faces charges and has been suspended without pay for four weeks.
A Wallkill gun case has led to a Middletown man's imprisonment for 4.5 years. Kevin Brown has been sentenced for his involvement in a "shots fired" incident near the Middletown Motel in June, which involved an illegal firearm. Brown will also face five years of post-release supervision.
A Highland man, Charles Burgher, has been convicted of five counts of rape. The Ulster County District Attorney's office reported that Burgher was arrested at the 9W Motel in the Town of Ulster after a five-and-a-half-hour standoff. The defendant and child victim were neighbors residing in Highland for the majority of 2022, and the victim regularly cared for Burgher's four children.
