The town of Haverstraw is hoping to convert 25 acres of open land into a multipurpose park.
Residents such as Donis Aguilar are looking forward to the space, saying in part, “For me it's a good idea because we have a place to enjoy with my kids and play with everybody.”
The project is expected to be complete in three phases with a $7 million cost.
Taxpayers are expected to pay nothing, thanks to the land being purchased in 2014 from the state for recreational use. The property was priced at $1.
The proposal includes a multiuse synthetic field for sports including soccer and football, as well as a synthetic field for Little League baseball.
The plan also includes paths for jogging and walking that will line the perimeter with workout equipment. Two dog parks will also be available for use.
News 12 is told town officials are holding an informational session for the project on Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
