A group of Hasidic Jews and Ramapo police supporters clashed Sunday over an officer who made a woman remove her wig to take a mug shot.
Shifra Cohen, 23, turned herself into the Monsey Police Department Thursday after being accused of welfare fraud. Officer Jonathan Quinn made Cohen remove the wig for a booking photo, despite her protests.
"The public needs to have an education of what is Hasidic, what is orthodox, what is conservative, what is reform," one Cohen supporter said. They argue that making a Hasidic woman remove her wig is like having a woman remove her clothing.
The Hasidic community also plans to meet with Ramapo officials on Monday.
Quinn's supporters also showed up to express their anger toward Town Supervisor Chris St. Lawrence, who denounced the police action on Friday.
"This is to say we support [Quinn] and we oppose Supervisor St. Lawrence jumping to conclusions ? before the issue was thoroughly investigated," said a Quinn backer.
