It’s been nearly a week after the gruesome subway shooting in Sunset Park that injured dozens and the community is still reeling. Now community leaders are calling for gun control.
Dozens of community organizations rallied in support of public safety after at least 23 people were injured just days ago.
Organizers say they want to use this moment to reflect on that shooting and all the injured victims.
Advocates say gun violence is becoming an epidemic across the city and they’re calling for more resources to be allocated to make people in the community feel safe. They’re asking for more police officers and prevention programs to help people dealing with a mental health crisis.
Back in February, the mayor announced his subway safety plan which includes increasing police presence inside the stations as well as new response units to address mental health in the community.
Organizers outside of the station say they’re hoping to see a decrease in violence soon.
