A parent told News 12 that she won't send her child back to Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School – saying the facility is a "setup for failure." 

Miranda Nelson spoke with News 12 about the experiences of 17-year-old Nyla Satchelle, of Yonkers, at the school. Nelson is her legal guardian.

"It hurts. She is somewhere she can't learn, can't concentrate, can't function," says Nelson.

The Hawthorne Cedar Knolls School sits on the same campus as the Hawthorne Cedar Knolls Residential Treatment Center, which is for troubled kids. That treatment center is under scrutiny following a New York Times article reporting dozens of children there run away from campus. In one case, a runaway ended up as a victim in in a sex-trafficking ring. 

The school is just a few blocks away from the Hawthorne Train Station. News 12 was told the station was used by escaping students. 

Nelson says Nyla ran away once, but returned on her own.

The Cedar Knolls Union Free School District oversees the day school, where Nyla went. News 12 spoke with District Superintendent Mark Silverstein, who declined to comment about the school's alleged problems.
