The group “Save Mount Vernon” called on City Hall to give closure to the families of more than 20 murder victims that have gone unsolved.
Protesters said Mayor Richard Thomas isn't doing everything he can to make sure the Mount Vernon Police Department has all of the resources it needs.
"They don't have a gang unit, a major case squad and they haven't had a gun buyback program that people know of, since [Mayor Thomas] been in office,” said Jesse VanLew, of Save Mount Vernon.
Shawn Harris, the police commissioner for the City of Mount Vernon, said what has been holding the department back in solving some of these homicides is a lack of experienced officers and a lack of evidence.
Harris encourages people who see something to say something. He said there are anonymous ways people can help.
