There is a new push to designate an old Yonkers mansion as a historic landmark, and one group also wants to stop a mosque from being built at the site.
The mansion - first built in 1908 - is located within a residential area on Grandview Boulevard in the Colonial Heights section of the city. It was purchased by an Islamic group looking to turn it into a mosque.
Opponents of the mosque's construction say the place of worship would add more traffic to an already congested area. Some also say the property is poorly maintained, with a deteriorated front walkway and crumbling tiled porch.
One resident says they believe Islamaphobia is to blame for residents being against the mosque.
The current zoning of the mansion allows for a mosque there.
The Islamic Community Center of Mid-Westchester tells News 12 that it does not want to debate the issue through the media.
