The town of Greenburgh is planning to distribute body cameras to its officers.

The move comes in the wake of the fatal shootings of unarmed black men in New York and Missouri by police officers.

More and more police units across the country are getting these cameras in the hope of improving community relations.

Greenburgh's Police Chief Chris McNerny is asking the board for 18 body cameras. The cameras have the ability to load all of the video to a cloud for access and storage in the case of a controversy.

The chief cited a new study by a group called The Police Foundation, which found that wearing the cameras reduced complaints against officers.

The cameras will cost $30,000 total, and the police chief recommends that the town supervisor include the request in his upcoming capital budget funding. President Obama has already recommended that the federal government assist local governments in the funding of the cameras as well.

Greenburgh would join the Westchester County police, who are also planning to implement the cameras this year. Ossining and White Plains are already involved with the programs.
