A car crash on the Sprain Brook Parkway Thursday afternoon left one dead and three injured.
The two-car crash happened on the southbound side of the parkway near exit 100-B in Greenburgh around 3:15 p.m. Police say the driver of one car was riding in the center lane and wound up rear-ending another car while trying to switch lanes. Both cars careened off the highway.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and pulled four people from the wreckage. Two young men were taken by ambulance to the Westchester Medical Center with minor injuries. A female passenger was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injures after she was found unconscious and trapped in the car.
Police have not released the names of those involved.
Maria Desantos, who lives just off the parkway in Hartsdale, says she heard the noisy crash inside her house. "First I heard the screeching of tires then the loud banging on metal,? she says.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Police say they hope to gain more insight into what happened by examining the bodies of the wrecked cars.
