The Greenburgh Town Board voted last week to reduce the speed limit on a street that residents say is dangerous.
The speed limit on East Hartsdale Avenue will be lowered to 25 mph from 30. Officials are considering other measures to help increase safety such as lengthening sidewalks and shortening crosswalks.
Residents say speed bumps should also be installed on the street, but town officials say the bumps would cause drainage issues and be problematic for emergency vehicles.
Town Supervisor Paul Feiner says the town is doing everything it can to ensure safety.
"The town can never guarantee that there will never be an accident, but we can take steps that will reduce the chances of an accident from happening," he says.
Feiner expects the new speed limit signs to be installed by the end of the week.
Officials say they are also considering installing digital speed limit signs that would post the number of violations issued each week.
In 2008, a woman was killed when she was struck by an SUV while crossing the street with her dog. Police say she was using the crosswalk at the time. Eight months ago, a 27-year-old woman was critically injured while walking her dog.
