A Suffern family says they showed up to a loved one's grave to find the plot disturbed.
Mimi Chery says her mother was making her weekly visit to Brick Church Cemetery in Spring Valley to Chery’s brother's gravesite when she discovered something unsettling.
"She called me and she said, 'Somebody is digging up your brother's grave,'" Chery told News 12.
In disbelief, she drove to the cemetery to see for herself. She says that they “dug up the hole to make room for somebody else.”
While still there, Chery says a hearse pulled up for a funeral at her brother Jean Chery's plot.
“They stopped the funeral and then verified – it turned out to be a mistake,” she told News 12. “We had the same last name and they chose the wrong plot."
After everything was sorted out, Jean Chery's plot was put back together. However, the family says it will take some time before what happened can truly be restored.
A cemetery superintendent sent their apologizes to the family and told News 12 it was a miscommunication on the name from the funeral home.
