Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that a new vaccination site will open on March 3 in Yonkers at the New York National Guard Recruiting Center - aimed at reaching more people of color.
Gov. Cuomo says more is needed to reach the people most impacted by the virus.
The latest vaccination rates by race in the Mid-Huson region show that African Americans make up 13% of the population but have only received less than 7% of the vaccines. Hispanics make up another 13% but have only gotten 8% of the shots - a big disparity. White people make up 80% and have received 84% of the doses.
The governor says the mass vaccination site will do 1,000 shots per day for a total of 7,000 per week. It will be run jointly by the state and the federal government.
Initially, appointments will only be available for people who live in Yonkers.
Two pop-up vaccination sites, one in Haverstraw and one in Port Chester, will also open this week to address vaccine hesitancy in the Black community.
