Gov. Andrew Cuomo was at Rockland Community College in Suffern Wednesday, where he unveiled New York's aggressive plan to fight a heroin epidemic.
Cuomo says New York has a problem with heroin and one-third of all heroin seized in the country by the DEA is done in New York.
To combat the state's heroin epidemic, Cuomo says he plans to add 100 officers to the New York State Troopers' Narcotics Division. He also plans on starting a public awareness campaign at all public college and university campuses in New York. Lessons on the dangers of heroin will be offered at student orientation and dorm assistants will also be trained.
Peter Frazier, who lost his son Ryan to heroin last fall, was also at the press conference. Frazier appeared in News 12's special report "Hooked On Heroin" and says he is very happy to see the governor on board with making a difference.
Cuomo's heroin initiative does not require legislative approval and will be implemented right away. It is being paid for with existing funds in the budget.
