The sounds of music, cheers and Italian pride filled the streets of Williamsburg Sunday as the annual Giglio Feast celebrated its final day of festivities.

The centerpiece of the celebration is the Giglio, a towering structure dedicated to the feast's patron saint. During the traditional lifting ceremony, dozens of lifters carry and dance the massive tower through the streets while a band performs from above.

The tradition dates back generations and remains one of Brooklyn's most beloved Italian American celebrations. Originally brought to Williamsburg by Italian immigrants, the feast continues to serve as a way for families to preserve and celebrate their cultural heritage.

And, like any neighborhood feast, food remains a major attraction. Vendors lined the streets serving Italian favorites, including pasta and other traditional dishes to thousands of visitors.

For many participants, the event is about more than just a celebration.

“I grew up right over there, so it’s not even a question,” said Nicholas, a Giglio lifter. “I look out the window, I see the Giglio. This is our pride, and it’s incredible.”

Organizers said Sunday's lifting was dedicated to seniors who helped keep the tradition alive over the years. While many are no longer here, community members gathered to honor their memory and celebrate the legacy they left behind.

The artist of the hand-painted artwork on the tower, Peter Michael Conte, is also taking part in the lift. He is the first artist in 139 years to play both crucial roles in the time-honored festival.
