The pain at the pump is especially being felt in parts of Westchester County where some prices are more than $6 a gallon.

"In this area in general, the prices are 'redonkulous'," said Susan Valeri, who works in Katonah.

On Tuesday afternoon, some of those prices in the Katonah/Bedford area were $6.49, $6.13 and $5.69 for regular unleaded.

Those prices might seem high but people who live and work nearby say it's actually more typical for the area.

"Right in the middle of town, it seems to be the highest," said a Katonah resident.

That's what drives some residents to travel further away to get a cheaper option.

However, that effort to save some money is going less far by the day.

"In New York, the average for a gallon of regular gas today is at $3.65, that's up 4 cents from yesterday, 19 cents from a week ago," said Lauren Fabrizi, a spokesperson with AAA Northeast.

Officials with AAA say it's a good idea to compare prices before filling up.

"You want to shop around. Also, some gas stations may offer discounted prices for drivers who use their app or other rewards programs. There are also ways you can improve fuel economy. For starters, you want to make sure your tires are properly inflated," Fabrizi tells News 12.
