The MTA police K-9 unit now has a piece of training equipment thanks
to a Hudson Valley teen.
Alex Stearns, 15, spent months fundraising and building boxes for
the agency's Stormville K-9 training facility as part of his Eagle Scout
project.
"I feel kind of good knowing I can help people,” says Alex.
The teen says he chose to start the project after
seeing the boxes the unit was previously using were beginning to wither away.
"We
chose this because it really needed to be rebuilt,” says Alex.
Alex's father, who works in the MTA's IT department, helped him rebuild the boxes.
The equipment will help the officers find suspects in real life.
Sgt. Ed O’Flaherty and his K-9, Deuces, are the first duo to try them out.
"This
is a great help by Alex, because every couple of years we have to replace them
and it's difficult because of budgets. Chris and Alex volunteered to not
only make the boxes, but to raise the funds,” says O’Flaherty.
