Dozen turned out for a public meeting last night to speak up about the future of the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan.

There were some tense moments between local environmentalists and those "for" the plant during an open public meeting in Cortlandt Manor held by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Dozens rallied for more public records and meeting transcriptions. Those against the plant, cite earthquake preparation as a top concern. "It's truly arrogant to think that we can protect a highly corrosive toxic waste," says Dan Fullerton, of Buchanan.

An NRC spokesperson says Indian Point continues to meet all standards. "We believe it still would be able withstand a larger earthquake than we previously expected. But nonetheless, we still expect them to take a closer look at any vulnerabilities," says NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan.

Sheehan also says the group only transcribes meetings where decisions are made, not open houses. He adds that the NRC makes all information public, unless it's a safety concern.
