A retired FDNY firefighter who was a first responder on Sept. 11 was mourned at his funeral Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in West Nyack.
Robert Leaver, 56, spent months working at Ground Zero after the attacks. Friends say he was on the scene every day helping out and knew many people who were missing.
Leaver battled leukemia for 11 years in the aftermath of Sept. 11. He died earlier this week, on the same day as two other retired firefighters who worked at Ground Zero.
Ninety-two firefighters have died of illnesses related to working at Ground Zero.
