Five Newburgh police officers were sickened by toxic fumes after receiving a call about a woman threatening to hurt herself.

Police say they found the woman slumped over inside a car in the driveway of her North Dix Avenue home at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Instinctively opening the door to help, police say two officers were immediately overcome with chemical fumes.

Police say first responders tried to save the woman, whose name has not been released, but she did not survive.

In all, five officers were hospitalized for chemical poisoning.

Police say a note with instructions on how to commit suicide by inhaling mixed chemicals was found. They also say that a note was later found taped to the passenger side door warning officers about the deadly chemical fumes inside the vehicle.
