Tashera Simmons, the former wife of late hip-hop icon DMX, held a book signing in Yonkers for her new memoir.
The memoir, entitled "Dying to Self," details her personal journey of persistence and redemption.
The public book signing took place at One Pier Steakhouse Wednesday evening.
From her own recollection of her relationship with the late Earl Simmons to her challenging childhood, the book details a variety of obstacles Simmons has had to overcome.
The event welcomed readers to enjoy hors d'oeuvres, and chat with the author about the 219-page novel.
Simmons says she hopes for the book to inspire others in similar situations.
"My book is everything about the phoenix. It's like, no matter what happens in life, we can rise from the ashes with the most positive attitude and live freely," Simmons said proudly. "I'm hoping when people read it, they take away: You know? We have a spirit that is inside of us. That is built to help us make change the way that we see things and we need to tap into that."
Simmons says the book has been in the works for 10 years.
