Two forensic experts and an emergency responder were the latest witnesses to take the stand Monday in the trial of Rafael Lora, a traffic cop accused of fatally shooting Fermin Arzu on May 18, 2007.
Lora faces first-degree manslaughter charges, but has pleaded not guilty. He claims the shooting was in self-defense after he was dragged by Arzu's minivan. According to prosecutors, Arzu was shot in the chest five times.
Emergency responder Bruce Rosario took the stand, recalling to the judge how he treated an injured Lora after the incident. The forensic experts from John Jay College also described their observations at the crime scene.
Dr. Peter DeForest testified that he believes Lora was within feet or inches of the vehicle when shots were fired. "He put together our whole case, indicating what's consistent with the evidence that my client was dragged by the vehicle," says Stuart London, Lora's attorney.
Lora is expected to take the stand on Wednesday. Arzu's family says they can't wait to hear what he will say.
