Flu season in New York is in full swing, and health officials say this year is shaping up to be one of the worst in recent memory.

Doctors across Westchester County reported a sharp spike in flu cases, with hospitals seeing a growing number of patients needing treatment.

According to the New York State Department of Health, more than 4,500 people were hospitalized with the flu statewide last week — nearly 1,000 more than the week before. The increase is putting added strain on local health care systems.

Dr. Akshay Gupta, of Northwell’s Phelps Hospital, says several factors are contributing to the surge, including prolonged cold weather and ongoing vaccine hesitancy. He urges residents to take basic precautions, such as frequent handwashing, noting that the flu virus can survive on surfaces like doorknobs and countertops for up to two days.

For those who do get sick, doctors and residents alike stress the importance of rest and staying home to avoid spreading the virus.
