Firefighters spent 12 hours battling a five-alarm fire at a furniture warehouse in Mount Vernon. Officials say the fire broke out at the two-story warehouse on Sanford Boulevard and Franklin Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. It took three different fire departments to battle the flames at the Munrod Interior Upholstery business and the cold weather did not help those efforts. Two firefighters were taken to Mount Vernon Hospital and were treated and released for minor injuries. The blaze forced residents in a nearby apartment building to be evacuated, but they have since been allowed to return. The building was completely destroyed. Fire officials say the furniture and other combustible materials may have fueled the fire. The cause is under investigation.
