Hundreds showed up to protest outside a New Windsor Immigration and Customs Enforcement administrative office on Monday.
Participants lining Route 300 said that if ICE continues with its
expansion plan, they will make life difficult for ICE staff.
The Democratic Socialists of America organized the protest, which drew many more than just DSA activists: parents, grandparents, children and elected officials.
About 250 attended the event.
Marina Ferretti of New Windsor said immigrants — both documented and undocumented — have been dehumanized by President Donald Trump and his supporters.
She said people with compassion for immigrants must keep attending protests to repeatedly tell their neighbors passing by that they disapprove of
ICE's expansion, especially considering the outcome of ICE's recent surge in Minneapolis.
"I don't think the damage will be fixed in my lifetime," Ferretti said. "I just want it [fixed] for my children."
Republican Orange County executive Steve Neuhaus is fighting ICE on another front.
He said in a Facebook update this weekend the county is poised to sue once ICE submits any official documents for construction of the proposed Chester detention center.
"We've seen before what happens in other cities," he said. "It's been a complete dumpster fire. I don't want that here."
Neuhaus is concerned about the cost of police overtime to monitor protests, clashes between protestors and counter-protestors, and traffic.
Protestors parked in the ICE office's parking lot, creating some confusion and at times slowing traffic.
Many others were shuttled over to the site from a nearby parking lot.
DSA organizers said to expect more protests in New Windsor, outside the proposed detention center in Chester and in Hudson Valley cities with large immigrant populations, like Newburgh and Poughkeepsie.
