Flu season is expected to ramp up in October, and this year there is a new vaccine option available for some adults.

MFlusiva has been approved for use in the United States for people 50 years and older. It is the first and only flu vaccine that uses mRNA technology.

Kawsar Talaat of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health says the vaccine provides genetic material from the influenza virus that allows the body's cells to produce influenza proteins and trigger an immune response.

Traditional flu vaccine options also remain available. They include a standard-dose flu shot approved for people ages 6 months and older, with other formulations available based on age.
