It's a first for New York City - a completely free grocery store opened in Manhattan, drawing hundreds of people who lined up around the block to get food.
Prediction market company Polymarket opened the temporary pop-up store that allows shoppers to take home groceries at no cost. No price tags or checkout lines, either. Organizers say the company also donated $1 million to Food Bank for New York City.
Tori Hall arrived at 6 a.m. to be first in line.
"We have a family at home. Times are hard. Times are going to get harder, and things are very expensive," said Hall.
The opening comes as many New Yorkers continue to feel the strain of high food prices. Craig Wiggins, who was waiting in line, said the effort "definitely sends a strong message to the American consumer and most importantly, capitalism, because there's so many families struggling and trying to keep a roof over their head."
The store is stocked with fresh produce, meats, snacks, household items and even Valentine's Day flowers. It will remain open while supplies last through the weekend.
The store is located at 137 7th Avenue South.
