The first-ever female town supervisor has been sworn in in Rockland County.
Teresa Kenny took her oath of office as Orangetown town supervisor.
“It was exciting and it’s long overdue, and I'm honored to be the first woman and I'm looking forward to getting in there and do the job,” Kenny said.
In Rockland County's 221-year history, all their town supervisors have been men until Tuesday, when Teresa Kenny officially accepted her new position.
Kenny said when she announced her run, she didn't realize she would be the first woman town supervisor in Rockland County and admitted it added more pressure to the race.
“A little overwhelming, like I felt like I had this little bit of a burden on me that if I didn’t get it, I would be like, ‘ugh we have to wait again.’ But I didn't let it get to me, I really didn't, because I knew at the end of the day that was not going to be the deciding factor,” Kenny said.
An Orangetown attorney for more than two decades, Kenny wants to leave her mark in Orangetown. First on her agenda as supervisor is to update the town’s old and outdated comprehensive plan.
“It was done in 2003, so it needs to be updated, and that is the first, among other things, but is right on the top,” Kenny said.
