Calls and angry emails from firefighters have been rolling into News 12 all week after Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano vented his frustration with the city's bravest on News 12 Newsmakers last weekend.
He maintains that the demands of the Yonkers Uniformed Fire Officers Association Local 207 are over the top, and are costing the taxpayers millions of dollars because of what he calls retaliatory "sick calls" and sky-rocketing "disability claims."
In this weekend's edition of Newsmakers, firefighters will have their chance to respond to the mayor. They claim the mayor's assertions are unfounded and that he is not negotiating in good faith.
"If the mayor thinks the overtime is excessive, he should be calling his fire commissioner -- not making accusations at the firefighters," said Barry McGoey.
Mayor Spano told News 12 Friday that the "City of Yonkers does not intend to negotiate any labor contract in a public forum or debate on News 12. Instead, the administration encourages the fire union heads to return to the negotiating table and settle a contract that would be fair for both our fire officers and taxpayers."
Newsmakers airs on Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
