One person is dead and a suspect is in custody following a shooting in New Windsor Wednesday morning, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

The shooting happened in the area of 1404 and 1406 Hawthorne Way inside The Grove townhouse complex.

Authorities say the violence stemmed from a long-running dispute between neighbors. The DA described it as a terrible situation involving anger and poor judgment with a firearm.

Town Supervisor Stephen Bedetti says this is the first fatal shooting in New Windsor in several years and described the shooting as “tragic,” saying he believes both families involved have children.

A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, expressed concern about the impact on the community, saying there are many children in the neighborhood.

News 12 has reached out to New Windsor police for information.
