Families left homeless after Mount Vernon fire
Several families are homeless this morning after a fast-moving fire ripped through a house in Mount Vernon on Tuesday.
Fire official say flames and heavy smoke could be seen shooting out of the top floor of the two-story home at 602 South 5th Ave. around 5 p.m. They say when crews arrived at first they had reports of people trapped inside the house. However, firefighters did a search and found no one.
About 35 firefighters worked the scene as the fire began to spread through the roof and windows. One firefighter was taken on a stretcher to the hospital but his injuries are not considered life-threatening.
According to Red Cross officials, four families are now displaced due to the fire and are receiving help.
No word yet on the cause of the fire.
