A fast-moving fire destroyed several apartments in Mount Vernon this morning.
Fire officials say they got a call around 6:30 a.m. today about a blaze at 484 Gramatan Ave.
When firefighters arrived, they found flames raging. “The fire on the fourth floor was fully engulfed -- flames going out both windows. By the time we got the people out of the building and got [the] hose up to fourth floor, it had extended to the fifth floor,” says Mount Vernon Fire Chief Al Everett.
Everyone in the building was evacuated safely. Three firefighters were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Investigators have not determined a cause yet, but say it does not look suspicious.
