The LaGrange fire chief says the 17-year-old pilot of a plane that crashed at a Dutchess County airport on Sunday afternoon walked away unharmed.

She was the only person onboard when authorities say the single-engine Cessna 172 began experiencing engine failure before crashing in the woods.

The aircraft flipped over near Gidley Road just short of Runway 17 at Sky Acres Airport.

Witnesses said they could tell something just was not right.

"I saw a plane going down beyond the tree line behind my backyard, and then it appear, I saw it trying to ascend again in the distance and then it disappeared, but did not hear anything" said Richard Michos.

The pilot managed to remove herself from the plane.

The plane will be removed on Monday.

Dutchess County Executive Marcus J. Molinaro tells News 12 in a statement, “We are grateful to all of the first responders assisting this evening in the Town of LaGrange at the site of a small plane crash on Gidley Road, including the New York State Police and the LaGrange Fire Department, who are the lead agencies at the site, as well as mutual aid agencies. The single occupant of the Cessna aircraft was able to remove herself from the plane with no injuries. The Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response is on site assisting incident commanders and the County's Hazardous Materials team is addressing any fuel leak issues."

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are now investigating the cause of the crash.
