Getting around downtown Yonkers is proving to be a challenge ever a since a massive fire destroyed several businesses on Thursday and Friday.
Crews began tearing down the two-story building at 5 South Broadway over the weekend. That blaze ignited inside a dollar-store, which was destroyed along with a McDonald's. There is no word on the cause of the fire.
Demolition on the building is expected last into the week. Crews say the work is tricky since there is a grocery store attached to the wreckage on one side and historic St. John's Episcopal Church on another.
Getty Square is a very busy area of downtown Yonkers with lots of stores and numerous bus stops, including spots where many students take the bus to school. Police are recommending that motorists continue to avoid the area until the demolition is complete.
