Warming centers were established in Westchester as the temperatures continued to drop to below freezing Sunday night.

The Bernice Speckman Community Center, which will be used as a warming center in Yonkers, was set to remain open for 24 hours after opening at 8 p.m.

The city's Office of Emergency Management brought cots and water for residents staying in the center.

Officials say they're concerned about additional dangers people may face as they try to stay warm.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano urged residents to not have anything near sources of heat, like a fireplace or space heaters. He also says to not use an extension cord for space heaters.

Spano also says to not use an oven or hot plate for heating.

Carmen Calabrese, a warming center worker, says it's important for people to take advantage of it.
