The fiancée of a missing kayaker in Orange County has now been charged with his murder.
Police say Angelika Graswald, 35, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 46-year-old Vincent Viafore. She was sent to Orange County Jail without bail.
State police held a news conference today and said there were many inconsistencies in Graswald's account and that she implicated herself from statements she made to police.
Graswald and Viafore were kayaking on the Hudson River on April 19 when Viafore's kayak capsized near Cornwall. Graswald says she called 911 before being tossed in rough waters herself. She was rescued by a nearby boater, but Viafore, who police say wasn't wearing a life jacket, was never found.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 5 at 4 p.m.
In an exclusive interview from the Orange County Jail, Graswald said she is being wrongfully accused of tampering with Vincent Viafore's kayak to kill him. She says the accusations come after police found a diary with intimate details of their relationship.
