There were some scary moments in New Rochelle last night after a car slammed into a fence and stopped just steps away from a house.
Police say a driver of a car traveling northbound on Palmer Avenue lost control at the corner of Stephenson Boulevard. The car knocked over a lamp post, went through a fence and some bushes, finally stopping in the front yard of a home on the corner.
The driver spoke with News 12 and says his gas pedal got stuck underneath his floor mat and hitting the brakes caused his vehicle to fishtail and go spinning backward into the yard. Police on the scene say they suspect speed may have been a factor.
People living in the house tell News 12 accidents happen quite frequently on the corner, and say they have spoken to city officials about adding guardrails.
A neighbor who lives across the street says that cars have landed in his yard as well over the years. John Sotallaro says he thinks some drivers coming around the curve too fast don't realize there's a light and get into trouble when they try to stop. "We used to have a six-foot picket fence and two pine trees in front of our house, you notice they're no longer there," says Sotallaro.
