Two female lawyers running for election this November are hoping to become the first Black women elected to be judges in the city of Yonkers.
Verris Shako and Karen Best came in first and second place respectively during the June primary election.
Although they are competing against one another in the hotly contested race they do share one major influence in common - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Both women credit her and her legacy with making their candidacies possible.
Shako and Best aren’t the only candidates running for judge. There are five candidates for three seats.
