A federal judge has ruled that the current-at-large election process for East Ramapo school board is unjust.
A lawsuit filed by the Spring Valley chapter of NAACP and several minority voters claimed the school board’s system operated to exclude the votes of African Americans and Latinos. The group advocates the election of board members by wards.
The ruling states that the judge now wants the district to be divided into nine voting wards.
East Ramapo’s school board cannot hold any further elections, including an upcoming election scheduled for June 9, under the current system.
The decision came about after the judge presided over a trial earlier this year in White Plains’ Federal Court.
