Family’s dog dies in Mount Vernon apartment fire

Firefighters were called to the scene of an apartment building fire that claimed the life of a Mount Vernon family's pet.

A fast-moving apartment fire has claimed the life of a family’s dog in Mount Vernon.
Firefighters were called to the apartment building at 243 W. First St. around 9 a.m. Search-and-rescue efforts discovered the small dog who had already died.
Despite heavy smoke conditions, the fire was extinguished. 
No other injuries were reported, and the cause for the fire is being investigated.
