Mount Vernon firefighter Kevin Townes was on duty this morning when someone called reporting smoke coming from a home around 2:30 a.m.
Townes and nearly two dozen firefighters suited up to go into the home on 124 Lorraine Ave., but he never made it inside.
Townes collapsed as he was entering the house. Paramedics tried to revive the 54-year-old using a defibulator and CPR, but he was pronounced dead at Mount Vernon Hospital.
Crews were able to put the fire out quickly. No one appeared to be home during the fire, and investigators are still looking into the cause.
In addition to his three children, Townes leaves behind his wife and a stepdaughter. He will be given a full firefighter's funeral, but details are still being worked out with his family.
