A family was forced to flee their home after a fire in Mount Vernon overnight.
Fire officials say a call came in around midnight about a fire at 176 Hillside Ave.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered flames in a closet in the attic of the three-story wood-frame single-family home.
It took about 25 firefighters a half an hour to get the flames under control. "It was under control quickly; they were able to get up there and make a quick attack, open it up and put it out," says Mount Vernon Deputy Fire Chief Edward Stephens.
The family living in the home was not able to go back in because Con Edison had to shut off the power to the building.
Stephens say no one was injured, but the third floor of the home did suffer extensive damage. He says the fire is under investigation, but the cause does look to be electrical.
