The families and friends of both a 12-year-old victim and the teenage suspect accused of causing her overdose faced off outside the Yonkers Family Court Thursday.
The 15-year-old suspect, whose name is being withheld, allegedly gave Dana Regan a lethal dose of methadone last month. The teenager has been charged as juvenile with endangering the welfare of a child, but he could face upgraded charges.
Supporters of the suspect argued the accidental nature of the girl's death. Veronica Moreno, a friend of the defendant, says the suspect was attempting suicide while Regan was looking to get high at the time of the incident. Moreno believes the suspect needs help, not punishment.
"Don't take him to jail," says Moreno. "Let him go to rehab."
Regan's mother believes two other teenage boys were involved and want them all brought to justice as well.
"He killed my daughter," shouted Cindi Brink.
